Lectopia Wins 2006 WAITTA Product Category

The Lectopia team was delighted to receive the Product Category Award at the 2006 WA IT & Telecommunications Awards (WAITTA) Dinner held on Friday 23 March. The award, recognising excellence in an IT&T product developed by a Western Australian organisation, was received by Project Director Michael Fardon on behalf of the team. There was strong competition from a diverse field in this category, with a total of four shortlisted products. It was Lectopia's first appearance at the WAITTA Awards, rounding out a strong University of Western Australia presence overall, with other departments receiving nominations in numerous categories. iLecture/Lectopia Name Change

During 2005 the Office of Industry and Innovation held a competition, open to all staff and students, to come up with a new name for iLecture (the name had to be changed due to trademark restrictions). The winning entry was 'Lectopia' suggested by Rebecca Rey (FAHSS student), who combined the word 'lecture' with 'topia' (taken from the Greek 'topos' meaning 'place') to signify 'a place of lectures'.

iLecture/Lectopia Expansion

During 2005 the iLecture/Lectopia community was joined by Deakin University, Duke University, Swinburne University, University of Auckland, University of Newcastle, and University of Tasmania. In the Australian context, 30% of universities are now using iLecture as their lecture capture and delivery solution.

The Works - Student Projects Gallery

The Multimedia Centre would like to announce the completion of The Works - an on line gallery exhibiting outstanding student work in digital media at UWA. The Multimedia Centre invites you to view this exciting showcase of digital media projects that have been produced by students as part of their studies in a variety of Arts, Humanities and Social Science units. The Works Gallery houses some of the best student projects and includes excellent examples of Digital Videos, Flash Projects, Website Construction and Interactive Stories.

iLecture Grant

The Arts Multimedia Centre is very pleased to announce that from 2005, due to funding received from the University Facilities budget, the standard iLecture System service will be FREE at UWA for all areas. Staff wanting information on how to record and publish their lectures online via the iLecture system are welcome to contact the iLecture Team at ilectures@uwa.edu.au.

iLectures is a facility offered to UWA by the Arts Multimedia Centre that enables a digital recording (audio or video) of a lecture or presentation to be published online for restricted or community access. Further information regarding the iLecture System can be found by visiting the iLecture website.


ASCILITE Conference, 5-8 December 2004

UWA was the host of ASCILITE 2004, the 21st annual conference of the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education. The theme of the conference was Beyond the Comfort Zone—a theme that aimed to examine alternative and innovative developments in educational technology. Delegates from throughout the Australasian higher education community attended a vibrant and diverse conference program featuring 136 presentations over four days.

The Arts Multimedia Centre supported the ASCILITE 2004 Conference through the critical provision of technology and technical support for all conference presenters and venues. Michael Fardon, Academic Director of the Multimedia Centre, was a member of the Conference Executive, and he and the MMC's administrative and technical staff were instrumental in contributing to the overwhelming success of the conference.



Multimedia Centre Refurbishments

The Multimedia Centre has a new look for the start of semester one in 2004, with facilities and office spaces receiving a considerable facelift during the summer months. These upgrades are part of a wider project to improve the facilities and accessibilty of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Centre now boasts a highly-flexible collaborative learning studio with a wide-range of technological capabilities; a professional recording studio; two fully-equipped project studios; and a teaching laboratory.



WebCT Learning Innovation Grants

The Multimedia Centre is very pleased to announce that, following an application process advertised in September, Alexandra Ludewig (German Studies), Hélène Jaccomard (French Studies) and Andrea Stanberg (Music) have each been awarded a 2004 Multimedia Centre WebCT Learning Innovation Grant.

The aim of the grants is to encourage the development and user-diversity of WebCT tools within the context of Arts disciplines. Each recipient is required to write a brief project report at the end of 2004, and these reports will be published on this website.



Diversity Initiative Grant

In 2003, The Multimedia Centre together with A/Prof Jane Long, Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, was successful in winning a diversity initiatives grant to investigate "Improving access to online and powerpoint resources for students and staff with Colour Deficient Vision (CDV)".

This project aims to undertake a review of existing websites associated with the Faculty to test for CDV accessibility. Necessary amendments will be made, and a report will be generated for more general use within the University will provide some useful information about the approaches used within the Faculty, that can be readily adapted to similar reviews elsewhere within the University. A hardcopy and online brochure will be produced containing information and examples regarding CDV awareness.



AUTC Institutional Award

In 2002, the Multimedia Centre was the recipient of an Australian Universities Teaching Committee Award for our Innovative and Practical Approach to the Provision of Educational Services to the Local and/or Regional Community. This prestigious award acknowledged The Multimedia Centre's commitment to achieving a high-level of flexibility and innovation in ts approach to teaching and learning processes.
